Family Unprepared After Separation from Army

My husband was taken to the hospital at 4:30 am one Sunday. On Monday I called the VA to ask about him being transferred to their facility due to no health insurance. That is when I was told, since he served 27 months in Iraq and had received an honorable discharge he could apply for health care  I as a spouse have dealt with complaints of receiving no help due to medical bills and extra expenses. Why since Feb. 2013 has no one told him about the option of healthcare? He is covered for 5 years. What about after 5 years? This is something that should be explained to every military member prior to separation.
